How We Raised a $16M Series A with a16z: Pitch and Data Decks You Can Use
Last year, after a year of building and validating our startup, we reached a pivotal moment. We had a solid MVP, meaningful customer traction, and a fast-paced iteration cycle. To fuel growth, we needed to scale operations and attract top talent—so fundraising became the next critical step. We entered a climate many consider challenging for fundraising: venture capitalists tightening their belts, and industry insiders cautioning against public fundraising signals that might not close. Yet we chose to press forward, guided by a clear mission and a confident strategy. We decided that standing out in a risky environment required aiming for outperformance, not the status quo.
Today, we’re paying it forward by sharing the pitch and data decks that helped us secure a $16M Series A from a16z. Here are the key lessons we learned along the way:
-
Own the narrative
Your pitch deck should be a concise, compelling story about your startup that stays focused on the essentials. The data deck complements that story with hard numbers, enabling deeper dives into the underlying drivers of your business. Master both so you can set the tone and address investor questions proactively rather than reactively. -
Build momentum
Highlight the MVP and demonstrate how its features address the core problem. Show early adopter responses to illustrate momentum—this is just the tip of the iceberg and signals potential for scalable growth. -
Listen deeply
Revenue is not the sole signal at this stage. Demonstrate how you’re incorporating market feedback and iterating on your MVP. A disciplined feedback loop is the engine that will eventually power scale. -
Don’t try to boil the ocean
Focus on “hero” data points that drive your overall narrative. Ensure every chart is easily digestible at a glance, delivering a single clear takeaway that reinforces your story. For more detail, see our blog post and data deck template, which outline the metrics we included and why.
We’re still early in our journey, and we’re committed to learning and sharing our ongoing experience. If you find this helpful or have your own tips to contribute, please share in the comments.
